IT, Risks and Ergonomics (Week 9)

Whether they are in the IT sphere, or not Design flaws are actually more common than you think and can lead to some bad disasters happening. The urge to break "mainstream" and to think outside the box, is what most people think breaks the laws and rules of a healthy design and make it defective in some ways. In this week's blog we are going to talk about two designs/inventions that set off to try some new things and while one of them succeeded and has set some standards for IT industry, other while more related to architecture than technology, has turned out to be a catastrophe.

1. The "Walkie - Talkie"

The world - famous architect Rafael Viñoly has designed and built a 38 story tall skyscraper in 20 Fenchurch Street in London's financial center. It was designed as a glass surface building with a curved shape thus leading to it's nickname the "Walkie - Talkie". It looked out of the ordinary for sure, but that curvilinear shape was the main cause of the problems in the first place. The south facing exterior wall of the building was built from reflective glass, combined with its conical shape, it gathered beams of sunlight and reflected them in one small are of super hot beam of light, just like a 160 meters tall magnifying glass would. Soon after when the building was finished, local shopkeepers from the district have started to report shop's doors melting and the carpets inside the shop catching on fire. Cars parked in front of the building have reportedly experienced severe melting and deformations.

2. Reels and Shorts

There is surely no doubt that social media has a really big impact on our society nowadays. People and especially teens and young adults are heavily influenced by different social networks, and they act just like a time killer and even a getaway platform from everyday life that anybody can share their thoughts and skits from their lives freely. As people in modern society are increasingly becoming less passionate and busier in their day to day lives, social networks have adapted and released a short - form video format often referred to as "shorts" or "reels". If we go back a few years from now, the videos in social media were more sophisticated and also had longer watch times. In order to attract casual audience that only goes on social media to relax in their work breaks or use it as a leisure method in their free time, these new video formats have been limited to a maximum of a minute long watch time which makes them a great alternative over other long videos or text content. However, these video formats can alter the brain into thinking you are spending less time on social media because each video is shorter, but doing the opposite by keeping you stuck in with continuous flow of content. Despite mainly consisting of  short skits, funny videos and other not significant content, videos in short format seem to be just what the users needed : killing time and keeping you busy without you getting bored by constantly altering between different content and creators. Reels has seen a lot of hype and it will continue to change the way social networks work and shape not only users but also creators into mainstream.
