Computers and Laws II: Software and Content Licensing (Week 6)

Most people are familiar with the term Copyright which describes the rights of creators that they have over their content. On the other hand, the term Copyleft, also widely known in the open source community, is a practice to make a copyright content redistributable and open source again. There are different methods and levels of Copyleft content and in this week's blog we are going to take a brief look at them.

Strong Copyleft - Strong Copyleft conditions state that if a content includes some of your code, it still should be redistributed under the name of your license, if at all.

Weak Copyleft - However, under Weak Copyleft conditions, if a product contains some of your code, some parts of it should be published and redistributed under your license, but some parts can be distributed under other licenses as well. Even if the finished product is the modified version of your code and serves the same purpose.

No Copyleft -  As the name suggest No Copyleft conditions do not limit the redistribution of changed/modified software, and it can be released as an exclusive version of the code.
